They began as part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame project whereby recording executives on the committee for awarding musicians, a walk of fame star on the Boulevard, realised people in the industry deserved accolade. So the National Academy of Recording Art and Sciences was created and the Gramophone Awards began.

Record of the Year was Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day
