The Ultimate Polymath
During his lifetime Da Vinci turned his hand to many things - painting, sculpting, inventing, botany, history, astronomy, anatomy, engineering, cartography, writing, geology, architecture, music, literature, mathematics and science. He is considered to be the father of Palaeontology and architecture and is widely believed to be one of the greatest painters of all time.
A Tasty Tragedy
During his lifetime Da Vinci used a variety of mediums in his art, including food. He made several sculptures for his friends using marzipan, but sadly none survive today as they were eaten! In his notes Leonardo laments this - ''I have observed with pain that my Lord Ludovico and his court gobble up all the sculptures I give them, right to the last morsel.''
A Father of Invention
Being such a profound polymath, Leonardo came to invent a variety of machines during his lifetime, including a self-propelled cart, a revolving bridge, scuba gear, and even a robotic knight. In the field of conflict he invented a number of war machines - an armoured car, a giant crossbow, and a triple-barrelled canon to name a few. But the most well known among his imaginings are the innovations he made in the world of flight, designing the aerial screw, the flying machine and the parachute.
