Commanded an expedition on his ship the Gjoa and travelled to the North Pole discovering the Northwest Passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean during the venture.
The first explorer to visit both the North and South Poles.

Reaching The South Pole

On 14th December 1911 Amundsen planted the Norwegian Flag at the South Pole, 35 days ahead of his rival, the British explorer Captain Robert Scott. The 1800 mile expedition from a base camp in the Bay of Whales took 5 men 99 days.  Unlike Captain Scott's party, the entire crew returned home safely.

Reaching the North Pole

In 1926, he set out with Umberto Nobile to reach The North Pole aboard the airship Norge.  They flew over the North Pole in mAy 1926 in what is considered the first undisputed visit to the North Pole.
Roald Dahl was named after him.
