The CIA-employed dictator
Whilst maintaining close ties with CIA, Noriega seized power in Panama in 1983, and formed the first narcokleptocracy - a regime whose wealth was derived from the trade of illegal drugs and other organised crime. He was associated with the Colombian kingpin Pablo Escobar and rigged elections to favour his cronies. In 1990 he was eventually arrested and extradited to Florida to face charges of drug trafficking, racketeering, and money laundering.

Although Noriega tried to adopt the moniker 'El Man', his enemies mostly knew him as 'Old Pineapple Face' due to his pock-marked skin - the result of a childhood illness.
