Established the Arthur Ashe Foundation to Defeat Aids. He himself reportedly contracted the disease through a blood transfusion when he had open heart surgery at 40.
Founded Artists and Athletes Against Apartheid in 1983 which worked toward raising awareness of Apartheid policies and lobbying for sanctions and embargoes against the South African government. Two years later the was arrested outside the South African embassy in Washington during an anti-apartheid protest on January 11, 1985.
