What's in a name?
While travelling by train from New York to L.A. in the 1920's, Walt showed his wife a sketch of a character he had created - 'Mortimer Mouse'. Lillian made a face, commenting "Not Mortimer, it's too formal. How about Mickey?".
The Brightest Star
As well as having two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame - one for motion pictures and one for television - there are also a number of stars dedicated to Walt's creations and other Disney characters. You can find stars for Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Snow White, Tinkerbell & Winnie The Pooh. Mickey Mouse's induction into the Walk of Fame was the first ever star placed for an animated character.
The Honourable Walt
The Walt Disney Family Museum records that Walt, along with members of his staff, received more than 950 honors and citations from throughout the world. Among the honours for Walt are honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles. As well as this, in 1980 a minor planet was discovered and named '4017 Disneya'.
Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho
When he won the special award Oscar for 'significant screen innovation' for the feature length animation 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarves', Walt received one statuette and seven miniature statuettes on a stepped base.
