A wartime leader and statesman who led Britain to victory in the Second World. He was an inspirational orator and prolific writer. When he became Prime Minister during WWII, he gave 6 major speeches in 4 months. One of his most famous stating “We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender.”
After his death in 1965, HRH Queen Elizabeth II declared that his body would be laid in state and that he would have a state funeral - privileges normally observed only for royalty. His funeral was on elf the biggest in history with 112 nations represented inside St Paul's Cathedral in London. More than 350 million people watched the funeral on television.
It took him 3 attempts to pass the military exam to enter Sandhurst.
His political career spanned more than 60 years from winning his first seat in 1900 until he retired in 1964.
As well as a writer he was a prolific painter, painting around 600 pieces during his lifetime.
Wrote about 20 books in his lifetime including a biography of his father and In 1953 he received the Noble Prize in literature.
While working as a war correspondent in South Africa, e was captured by Boers and taken to a prison camp. He escaped by scaling a wall in the dead of night. He was lucky enough to find the home of a British coal mine manager who hid him in a mine shaft for 3 days before sending him in a rail truck to Mozambique,
Statues of the Famous
A 12 foot high Bronze of Churchill stands in Parliament Square, London. Rumour has it there is an electrical charge in it to stop pigeons sitting on him.
Well known for his cigar smoking, he has a cuban cigar named after him - The Churchill.
