On 20th September 1973 Billie Jean King faced off against Bobby Riggs, the 1939 men’s Wimbledon champion, in the famous 'Battle of the Sexes' tennis match. Embracing the spectacle of the match, King was carried onto the court in a golden litter carried by 4 muscular men, and Riggs rode in on a rickshaw pulled by a team of women. King beat Riggs in straight sets before an estimated television audience of 50 million viewers.
