Abrams was one of the co-creators of the hit TV series 'Lost' and was the recipient of a number of awards for it, including 11 Emmy awards and a Golden Globe.

J.J.'s father Gerald produced over 100 TV movies during his career, including Houdini (2014), Nuremberg (2000), and Family of Spies (1990). Along with this, Carol, J.J.'s mother, was executive producer on the Disney film 'The Ernest Green Story' (1993) which went on to win the Peabody Award.

In 2009 Abrams took on the task of creating the new Star Trek film. Unlike previous Star Trek efforts, Abrams took the story back to the beginning and created an alternate future for the characters, telling the story of how they came to be together on the Enterprise. This reboot was a box office smash and became the highest grossing Star Trek film in the franchise - that is, until Abrams made 'Star Trek Into Darkness' in 2013, which grossed even higher at the box office.
