Said to have been one of the founders of the Royal Horticultural Society in 1804
A gardner at Syon Park, West London before becoming superintendent of the Chelsea Physic Garden in 1771. In 1784 William was appointed superintendent of the gardens of St James's and Kensington Palaces.
The genus of plant, Forsythia, was named after him.
