The first Paddington Bear book entitled A Bear Called Paddington was published in 1958. It's inspiration came from a last minute Christmas present purchase one Christmas Eve when, out of pity, Michael Bond bought the last bear glove-puppet in Selfridges as it sat alone on the shelf. 7 publishers rejected it before Collins paid Bond £75 and then bought it outright in 1958.
A TV series was created in the 1970s which led to Paddington and Michael Bond's worldwide fame. the books were translated into 40 languages and sold over 35 million copies. Paddington's first ever movie starring Hugh Bonneville and Nicole Kidman, was released in 2014, with a second in 2017.
Jeremy Clarkson's mother, Shirley Clarkson, made a prototype of the first Paddington Bear stuffed toy. She gave it to Jeremy, who was 12 at the time, and his sister Joanna for Christmas.
His last ever book, Paddington at St Paul's, will be available in 2018. He finished writing it just before his Death in June 2017.
