Discovered he was adopted at the age of 12.  His adoptive parents told him they found him in Barnados, but knew his birth mother's identity.  It transpires his adoption had probably been a private arrangement between Jenny, his birth mother, and Joyce, his adoptive mother, who was Jenny's hairdresser when she became pregnant.  Despite learning of his birth mother's whereabouts at 28 and corresponding together, he never met her.  

Imprisoned at 19 for 4 years for mail order fraud.
