The First 3 films he directed are now referred to as The Red Curtain Trilogy (Strictly Ballroom, Romeo & Juliet and Moulin Rouge)

Made his debut as a film director with the highly acclaimed Strictly Ballroom in 1992.

After the hit of Romeo & Juliet, Rupert Murdoch created an exclusive writing, directing and producing contract for Luhrmann with 20th Century Fox.

In addition to filmmaking he has directed Opera, fashion shows and made TV commercials for the likes of Chanel.

In 1999 he achieved a hit record with Everybody's Free (To Wear Suncreen).  The lyrics are taken from an essay written in 1997 by Mary Schmich.
