Often described as Somalia's most famous export, Iman gained international fame as a supermodel in the 1970s and 1980s.
The Photographer Peter Beard discovered Iman when he spotted her on a Nairobi street. At the time she had never read Vogue as she only read Time and Newsweek.
The fashion line "African Queen" by Yves Saint Laurent was devoted to Iman.
As a teenager had a first marriage to a fellow Somalian in Kenya where her family had relocated to in 1969.
