The Cherry Tree
The famous story about Washington chopping down a cherry tree as a child, and then confessing as his honest character meant he was unable to lie about it, is almost certainly untrue. Very little is known about Washington's childhood, and the cherry tree story first appears in a biography by Mason Locke Weems which was published a year after his death. However, so beloved was Washington that it is only one of the many stories about him. His status has become near legendary.
