Although born in Poland, Zinnemann considered himself to be Austrian as he grew up in Vienna. He emmigtaed to the US in 1929 where his career began as an extra in the movie All Quiet on the Western Front.
Over his 40 year career, Zinneman made more than 20 films, five of these alone received a total of 25 Academy Awards. He directed many Hollywood acting legends including Audrey Hepburn, Marlon Brando and Gary Cooper. 19 Actors appearing in his films have received Academy Awards.
Directed an array of critically acclaimed films across many genres including High Noon, Oklahoma, From Here to Eternity, A Man for All Seasons and The Day of the Jackal.
