Considered to be one of the leading figures of the Romantic Movement and literary movement in Europe in the 1800s. His most famous poems include The Curse of Minerva (which was written to denounce Lord Elgin's removal of the Parthenon marbles from Greece), She Walks in Beauty, Don Juan, and When We Two Parted.
Inherited his title from his great uncle in 1798 when he was just 10 years old.
Became famous overnight following the publication of the first of 2 cantos of 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage'
In April 1815 his name was legally changed to George Gordon Noel-Byron following his wife's inheritance from her uncle, 2nd Viscount Wentworth of Wellesborough. It was changed again in 1822 to George Gordon Noel.
Took his seat at the House of Lords when he was 21 years old.
In 1823, Byron was invited to support Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire. He donated £4,000 to refit the Greek naval fleet and took command of a Greek unit of elite fighters. He died shortly afterwards in 1824.
