Her family had wanted him to marry their eldest daughter, Liza, but he had other ideas. He was so shy he proposed to Sofia in code by writing 12 of some words on a card table and asking her to guess the meaning. The scene is recreated in Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina when Levin proposes to Kitty for the second time.
Very much in love when they married to the extent that they share their diaries with each other. Over the years their relationship reportedly became tempestuous as their values and beliefs went in different directions. He is reported to have left her when he was 82 after he had written a secret will and caught her searching for it.

Author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina which are widely considered as 2 of the finest novels ever written.
His first novel, Childhood (the first of his autobiographical trilogy with Boyhood and Youth to follow) was published in 1852 under the pseudonym L.N. to conceal his identity.
Fought in the Crimean war which is thought to have inspired War and Peace.
His parents came from ancient Russian aristocratic families. He became increasingly troubled by the privilege this brought him and developed an interest in the lifestyle and culture of the peasantry. This extended to making his own shoes in the traditional peasant way. He also gambled and gave away away much of his wealth.
Some consider Tolstoy’s essays on peace to have influenced the work of Gandhi in his pursuit of nonviolent resistance,. Gandhi called Tolstoy "the greatest apostle of non-violence that the present age has produced".
The family home, Yasnaya Polyana, is now a museum
By the time of his death, Tolstoy was a cultural icon and had followers world-wide. News that he was dying drew huge crowds and news cameras, making his death an international news story. He died at Astapovo trainstation, the same place his fictional character Anna Karenina came to her end. More than three thousand people lined the streets to see his coffin carried back to his home Yasnaya Polyana.
