In November 1957, Terence 'Pepe' Davis held Shirley at gunpoint in a hotel saying that he loved her and that if he couldn't have her then nobody would. After a two hour ordeal the police stormed the room and Davis managed to shoot himself in the leg. Bassey said she knew the man, had even agreed to marry him, but only because he had suffered brain damage in a previous car crash and she hoped it would help him get better. He was jailed for three years.
