Although he was brought up in a family of Scientologists, Neil himself has never really been a believer. He said in an interview that as 'a reader of science fiction fantasy, everything sort of became one glorious — what’s the word — morass, blancmange of belief.'
On 31st of August 1968, a South African man named Johannes Hermanus Scheepers gassed himself using the Gaiman's car. He was a lodger with the Gaiman's and after the incident David Gaiman sold the family's Mini. Neil didn't find out about the incident until many years later.
