South Africa's First Black President.
Nelson Mandela, as leader of the African National Congress (The ANC), became South Africa's first Black President in 1994. He was also the first President elected in a fully representative democratic election following President De Klerk's efforts to dismantle apartheid in South Africa.
"The World's most Famous Political Prisoner"
Nelson Mandela served 27 years in prison for his opposition to apartheid. Initially imprisoned in 1962, Mandela received a life sentence in 1964 at the Rivonia Trial when he was tried for sabotage, treason and violent conspiracy. He was transferred to Robben Island in 1963 where he remained until 1982. He was released from Victor Verster Prison on 11th February 1990 as a part of President De Klerk's efforts to end apartheid.
Opened the First Black Law Firm in South Africa.
Nelson Mandela went into partnership with Oliver Tambo to open the first Black legal partnership in South Africa in 1952.
Statues of the Famous
There are many statues of Nelson Mandela, but the biggest is six metres tall and resides in 'Nelson Mandela Square' in Johannesburg. The square was previously known as Sandton Square, until the centre's 10th birthday celebrations and the unveiling of the Nelson Mandela statue on 31 March 2004 to coincide with 10 years of democracy in South Africa.
