Occupations
Often billed as the world's most beautiful woman, she once said "Any girl can be glamorous," she once said. "All you have to do is stand still and look stupid."
Achieved world fame in 1933 after appearing in a steamy love scene and appearing nude in a 10 minute swimming pool scene in the Czech film 'Ecstasy'.
Signed by MGM in 1937 and given her new stage name which is said to be an homage to silent movie star Barbara La Marr.
Arrested twice for shoplifting, the first time in 1966 and the second in 1991. Neither arrest resulted in a conviction.
Helped develop an early technique for spread spectrum communication in 1942 with the composer George Antheil. In 1997 the pair received the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) Pioneer Award, and that same year Lamarr became the first female to receive the BULBIE⢠Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award, considered "The Oscars" of inventing.
According to her autobiography, she and Gene Markey started proceedings to adopt James Lamarr in 1939. When their marriage broke down in 1940, she claims to have fought to adopt the boy on her own. She then claims her third husband, John Loder, adopted James when they married. Following Hedy's death, James claimed he was in fact the birth child of Hedy and John, conceived when they had an affair some years before they married.
