Adopted the stage name Ice Cherry when he was trying to launch his career - it was swiftly dropped.
In 1979, Neil collapsed on stage and couldn't get up. 2 days later he had a tumor removed which had been growing very close to his spine. After the operation, he had to learn how to walk again.
In 1980, Neil became the highest paid debut actor ever when he received $3.5 million for the lead role in the movie The Jazz Singer.
Danced with Diana, Princess of Wales at a presidential ball at the White House in 1985. According the Neil, they shared one dance and later in the evening, Diana came over to him and reportedly said “Is it proper for a lady to ask a gentleman to dance?"
