Led efforts to develop the Congo River basin and persuaded Eurpoean nations and the USA to recognise this area as his own private colony.  He went on to build a vast fotune from it's resources to the detriment and widespread distruction of this area's people.  His legacy remains the human catastrophe which ensued in the Congo following his exploits there which inlduing kidnapping and a forced labour system in pursuit of rubber.
Died in 1909 leaving the throne to his nephew Albert I as his only son had predeceased him.
