War is hell

In 1940 Butterworth was a POW and escaped through a tunnel in 1941. After two further escape attempts he was sent to the infamous Stalag Luft III - site of 'The Great Escape' and the escape attempt described in the film 'The Wooden Horse'. Having been involved in the latter escape attempt in real life, Peter auditioned for a part in film, but was turned down as he didn't look athletic or heroic enough.
