Won The Grand National steeplechase twice, in 1986 on the horse West Tip and in 1994 on the horse Minnehoma.
Won the Cheltenham Gold cup in 1988 on Charter Party.
Was the jockey on the legendary horse Desert Orchard in the late 1980s winning he King George VI Chase in 1989 and 1990 as well as the 1990 Irish Grand Nationa amongst others.
Was the champion jockey for 3 consecutive seasons from 1992/93 to 1995/96.
During his professional racing career he won a then record breaking 1699 races.
Awarded his MBE for services to sport in 1993.
