Stalin's official biography states he was born on 21 December 1879, however official documents state his birthday is December 18th 1878.
Attended Tiflis to study to become a priest as per his mother's wishes. Here he discovered the writings of Karl Marx, rebelled against becoming a priest and declared himself a revolutionary seeking to end Tsarist Russia.
Adopted the name Stalin (meaning steel in Russian) following the death of his first wife, Kato.
Took part in Lenin's Russian Revolution, ordering the public execution of deserters and renegades following the fall of Tsar Nicholas II. Lenin subsequently appointed him General Secretary of the Communist Party. Following Lenin's death in 1924, Stalin declared himself his political heir and exiled his key opponent, Leon Trotsky, becoming dictator of the Soviet Union by 1929.
Known as a brutal dictator and considered responsible for the deaths of 20 - 40 million people through famine (which resulted from collectivisation), slave labour and killing sprees of those who opposed Stalin's policies.
