According to his stepson John, Alfie was a trumpeter in big bands including Geraldo and Ambrose. This is confirmed by the Canadian Encyclopaedia which says he "played lead trumpet for Alfredo in the late 1920s, for Ambrose, Jack Harris, Ray Noble, Lew Stone, Jay Wilbur and others during the 1930s, and for Geraldo during the 1940s." Alfie was noted for his fine articulation and pure tone retiring from the music business in the 1950's.
His death record records his date of birth as being the 9 June 1903, but the Canadian Encyclopaedia lists it as the 26 June.
During his playing career there was much interest in what his middle name might be. Composer Arthur Kirkby suggested it could be Sebag which stuck....to Kirkby. Alfie's middle name is revealed as Samuel on his death certificate.
